Soft Iron
Used to protect electrical items or entire bunkers from electro-magnetic radiation. Make sure electrical items are disconnected from the socket and turned off.Wrap a sheet of soft iron around the object requiring shielding, and the magnetic field lines which would have closed through the interior are diverted and close through the shield instead. Therefore any magnetic field that existed in the interior is greatly weakened.
Soft Iron is used to form shielding for components, instruments, and in some instances to even protect people from electromagnetic radiation. Even a single sheet placed between the protected object and the source/direction of the radiation will greatly reduce the effect.
Lead shields protect from ionizing radiation sources such as Gamma and Beta types but only Mumetal can work effectively on the lower non ionizing frequencies , like those created by electromagnetic storms. One might protect a computer by building a Faraday cage, but even better is a lead-lined Mumetal box to slip the computer into in times of high electromagnetic radiation.
Soft metals in use include mu-metal, supermalloy, supermumetal, nilomag, sanbold, Molybdenum Permalloy, Ultraperm, M-1040, etc.
